Job Purpose

The Manager, Cargo Ramp Operations is responsible for leading and managing all ramp-side cargo activities, ensuring aircraft are loaded optimally , and the staging area operates at peak efficiency. The role demands hands-on leadership of the ramp team, uncompromising adherence to safety and security standards, and close coordination with ground handling, warehouse, and airline stakeholders to maximise flight utilisation while minimising cargo offloads.

Key Performance Indicators

Flight Utilisation  Ensure optimal payload vs. capacity across all departures. Work closely with load control and warehouse teams to maximise cargo acceptance on every flight.

Offload Minimisation Proactively identify and mitigate offload risks at the earliest opportunity. Lead root-cause analysis for every involuntary offload and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Target offload rate is below 10% .

ULD Under-Wing Placement  Ensure all ULDs are built, staged, and positioned under-wing before the aircraft loading cut-off time on every departure. Monitor compliance in real time and escalate delays immediately to prevent impact on departure schedule.

ULD Return to Warehouse Manage the timely return of all arriving ULDs from the ramp to the warehouse. Track ULD dwell times, resolve delays proactively, and ensure zero overdue ULDs outside the agreed service level window.

Staging Area Management  Maintain full control of the ramp staging area, ensuring efficient cargo flow, correct zoning, and FIFO discipline at all times. Prevent backlogs, ensure traceability of all shipments in the staging area, and maintain the area in a clean and organised condition.

Safety Compliance Safety is the foremost priority for this role. Ensure full compliance with the SMS manual, IATA ground handling standards, and all applicable regulatory requirements. 

Skills and Competencies

Leadership and people management. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, 24/7 airside environment. Strong operational planning skills including load sequencing, ULD management, and staging area control. Analytical thinking and data-driven approach to performance management. Clear and concise communication with internal teams, airlines, and airport authorities. Sound and fast decision-making during disruptions and irregular operations. Adaptability and a continuous improvement mindset. Proficiency in cargo management systems and i cargo.

Education and Experience

Education

A Bachelor's degree is mandatory. An MBA or postgraduate qualification is preferred. 

Experience

A minimum of 15years of experience in the aviation or air cargo industry is required, with at least 4 years in a supervisory or managerial role with direct responsibility for ramp or ground operations teams. Demonstrated experience managing high-frequency operations is essential. A proven track record in ULD management, cargo ramp supervision, and people management is required. Strong working knowledge of the IATA Ground Handling Manual, SMS frameworks, and applicable national aviation regulations. Experience with dangerous goods handling and safety management systems is preferred.
